Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 1st, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Brothers and sisters, we have come from our home to this holy place. Summoned through the power of the Holy Spirit, we gather to listen to the challenges God issues to us in today's scriptures. Let us humbly welcome the living word of God in our midst, praying that we may be made worthy of the calling we received in baptism.
Today's scriptures challenge us to re-examine our behaviors, attitudes, and priorities. The words of Saint James in today's second reading are enough to make anyone shudder. The Lord Jesus is straightforward with his followers when he tells them, "Whatever causes sin, cut it away." As the word is proclaimed this day, let us be open to its challenges to become more and more like Christ.

We welcome to the Christian Community, David Michael Hurley III, child of David & Kristina. David was baptized last Saturday. May the Lord's presence lead him and his family to a closer relationship with his Creator.

MARY and the ROSARY

Traditionally, the month of October has been celebrated as the month of the rosary in honor of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This prayer dates back to St. Dominic in the 12th century. It became an approved devotion in the Church in 1569 and is used by many as a prayer of intercession and an effective meditation on the life of Jesus.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 24th, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

On this Lord's Day, we gather around the table of the word of God, where we will hear words that challenge and comfort us. As this Mass begins, let us pray for the strength to respond in love to the gospel's call to be the good news for all we meet.

In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks often about his coming passion. His disciples, for their part, ignore these predictions. Instead, they argue among themselves about what share in Jesus's royal power and glory will be given them. Jesus' response to the disciples' arrogance is not one of anger or frustration. What he does is remarkable - he hugs a little child and tells his disciples, and us, that whoever welcomes a little child welcomes him. That is who is greatest in Jesus' kingdom.

PARISH DISCOVERY DAYS
On Octber 21-22 all Masses will be celebrated in the School Gym. All leaders of parish groups are asked to begin preparations for your display on tables in the Gym.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 17th, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

This time of year brings about changes of every kind. The days of summer leisure have given way to renewed educational and family commitments. This time of change is echoed today as we meet Christ once again, present in the living word and in the Eucharist. He is the one who suffered, died, and rose after three days in the tomb. Let us pray that we will become more and more like Christ, even in his suffering, as we await the lasting triumph promised to those who put their trust in Him.

Today we hear one of the Lord Jesus' most challenging teachings. Those who wish to follow him, we are told, must deny themselves and take up the cross. The image of the suffering servant in today's first reading makes this teaching all the more challenging. The letter of Saint James suggests that those who choose to follow Christ must also do so in word and deed, caring for those who are less fortunage. Let us be open to God's challenging word and pray that we will be given renewed strength to follow Christ.

We welcome to the Christian Community, Rileigh Rosemary Winchell, child of Jeffery & Christine, who was baptized last Sunday. May God's blessings be with you and your loved ones.

We extend our sympathy and prayer to the family of Rick Bechand who passed away. May God welcome him joyfully into his Kingdom.

St. Xavier School News
Once a week the students grade K-12 take up a collection at the school Mass on Friday. The proceeds of the collection are placed in an Adapt-a-Child Fund. This program started as a service project during Catholic School's week in 1998. Since then the students at St. Xavier's school have adopted a brother and sister in Guatemala. When these children were adopted Velma was seven and Jorge was nine. They are now 15 and 17. The third and fourth grade class has been writing to them during the school year and they in turn write back. It is really neat to see how they have changed over the years.

The other charities include: St. Jude's Children Hospital, Covenant House in New York, Birthline, and the Open Door.

Twenty-Third Sunday In Ordinary TIme

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 10th, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Once again the Holy Spirit has drawn us together to give praise and thanks to our God. God opens our ears to hear the sacred word and our mouths to proclaim the good news contained in those words. As we begin Mass, let us be conscious of God's healing power, made present in this holy place in word and sacrament.

Today's scriptures are rich with messages for each of us. We are told to be strong and to fear not. We are summoned to show no partiality to those whom we encounter in our daily life. Today's Gospel reminds us that, at the time we were baptized, our ears were opened to listen to God's word. We were also enabled to proclaim that saving word to others. Let us open our ears now to hear words that challenge, encourage, and heal.

We congratulate David Hernandez & Natasha Heard who were married last Saturday. May your love for each other & God grow stronger each day.

We extend our prayers & sympathy to the family of Chuck Cimino who passed away on the 28th of August. May the loving Creator welcome him to Eternal Glory.

Remembering September 11, 2001

Come, Holy Spirit of Love and Peace, we long for you healing touch. On September 11, 2001 our country was scarred by hatred and revenge.. we long for you healing touch. Hearts were broken and lives were lost, and fear and anger prevailed... we long for you healing touch. Awaken in us, Holy Spirit, a deep and respectful remberance... that you are a God of love, not hatred, that you are a God of forgiveness, not revenge, that you are a God of peace, not war. Remebering these things, we ask you to bless our countr and all those defending its ideals of freedom and liberty and bring them safely home. May your gifts of peace, love and forgiveness transform our hatred, anger, and fear, so that peace on earth will be possible once again. Come Holy Spirit of Love and Peace, we long for your healing touch.

Twenty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 3rd, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we have been gathered together to lisen once again to the sacred word that brings life. What a wonderful gift celecrated in our midst. We humbly welcome the very life of God made present in this holy place. Let us honor the Lord our God as we begin this celebration of praise and thanksgiving.
Today's scriptures call us to conversion of heart. Echoing the words of Isaiah, the Lord Jesus summons us to avoid honoring God soley with our lips. We need to honor God with our hearts as well. Saint James tells precisely how to do that in today's second reading. We are to become, in his word, doers of the word. As the sacred word is proclaimed, let us askfor strength to honor God with our whole hearts by becoming doers of the word.
