Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 17th, 2006
St. Xavier Parish Home Page
This time of year brings about changes of every kind. The days of summer leisure have given way to renewed educational and family commitments. This time of change is echoed today as we meet Christ once again, present in the living word and in the Eucharist. He is the one who suffered, died, and rose after three days in the tomb. Let us pray that we will become more and more like Christ, even in his suffering, as we await the lasting triumph promised to those who put their trust in Him.
Today we hear one of the Lord Jesus' most challenging teachings. Those who wish to follow him, we are told, must deny themselves and take up the cross. The image of the suffering servant in today's first reading makes this teaching all the more challenging. The letter of Saint James suggests that those who choose to follow Christ must also do so in word and deed, caring for those who are less fortunage. Let us be open to God's challenging word and pray that we will be given renewed strength to follow Christ.
We welcome to the Christian Community, Rileigh Rosemary Winchell, child of Jeffery & Christine, who was baptized last Sunday. May God's blessings be with you and your loved ones.
We extend our sympathy and prayer to the family of Rick Bechand who passed away. May God welcome him joyfully into his Kingdom.

St. Xavier School News
Once a week the students grade K-12 take up a collection at the school Mass on Friday. The proceeds of the collection are placed in an Adapt-a-Child Fund. This program started as a service project during Catholic School's week in 1998. Since then the students at St. Xavier's school have adopted a brother and sister in Guatemala. When these children were adopted Velma was seven and Jorge was nine. They are now 15 and 17. The third and fourth grade class has been writing to them during the school year and they in turn write back. It is really neat to see how they have changed over the years.
The other charities include: St. Jude's Children Hospital, Covenant House in New York, Birthline, and the Open Door.
CARNIVAL
The St. Xavier School Parent-Teacher Organization will be holding its annual Carnival on Sunday October 1, from 12 to 4 pm in the parking lot. However, wel will let in anyone with a handicapped sticker or license after that time. Every one is invited to share in an afternoon of food, fun and games. A food court will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, baked beans, homemade pies, and other goodies. Games will include a fishpond, bingo, cakewalk, football toss, dart throw, Plinko, Pop-a-Shot basketball, Pepsi ring toss, grab bag, moonwalk, jail and others. In case of inclement weather, activities will be held in the school gymnasium.
We hope you will be able to join us!
