Sixth Sunday of Easter

Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 21st, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Today's responsorial psalm reminds us to sing a new song to the Lord. As the Easter season moves towards its fulfillment of Pentecost, let us take the many opportunities this Mass affords us to lift our voices in song to the one who died and rose to save us from sin and shows us the way to eternal life.

In today's first reading, Saint Paul addresses the deep division that existed between the circumsised believers and the Gentiles, the uncircumcised, who has received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Placing Christ at the center of the dispute became the answer and, in a bold, wise, and prophetic step, Paul orders that the Gentiles be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Today's readings give us much to ponder as we try to understand why religious and cultural differences sometimes erupt in acts of violence and terrorism.

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Fifth Sunday of Easter
May 14th, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Sisters and brothers, today the Lord Jesus announces that hw is the vine and we are the branches. The Holy Spirit draws us together in this holy place to be a people grafted onto the vine; a people whose very life comes from the power that radiates from the death and resurrection of Christ. We lift up our hearts and voices in a song of endless praise.

A marvelous image of the Church is set before us in today's readings. Jesus refers to himself as the vine and calls his followers the branches. Saint Paul, who once persecuted the early Christians - in a sense, attempting the server the branches - is converted to Christ and begins to proclaim boldly the name of the Lord. The Church is made up of a wide variety of people who together make up this glorious vine that bears the fruits of justice and peace, forgiveness and reconciliation, comfort and consolation.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

Fourth Sunday of Easter
May 7th, 2006

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

We are gathered together on this Fourth Sunday of Easter to be cared for by the Lord Jesus, our Good Shepard. When we listen to those who draw us away from the Lord, this Good Shepard constantly calls our names - he constantly calls us back. Let us give praise and thanks to God for sending the Good Shepard to be our helper and guide.
In today's scriptures we are called "children of God" and the "sheep" of the Good Shepard's flock. Let us be attentive to God's saving word. Through this living word, God seeks out those who are lost and offers shelter from the storms of sin and sadness.

Rest In Peace
We extend our sympathy and sorrow to the families of Maurine Meseke, Michael Lavender and Don Sanders who passed away last week. May they rest in the arms of their Creator.
