Fifth Sunday of Lent

Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 25th, 2007

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Sisters and brothers, as repentant sinners, we are gathered together by the Holy Spirit in this place of healing and reconciliation. As Easter begins to draw near, let us open our hearts to the saving action of our God in this celebration. Let us be unafraid to come before the Lord with our sinfulness and ask for forgiveness. We lift heart and voice in praise of our God who offers us this great gift.

Today's Gospel passage, perhaps more than any other, captures the immensity of God's mercy. The Lord Jesus shows the kind of mercy that we strife to show to others. When we take on the mind and heart of Saint Paul, who considered everything as a loss compared to his knowledge of Jesus Christ, we will know the tender mercy of our God. As the word of God is proclaimed, let us as God to open our hearts to the transforming power of that word.

If you are a visitor, we hope you enjoy your stay with family and friends. If you are new to the parish, welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community. Your prayers, time and talent as an active member are greatly appreciated. Please contact the Church Office to register and for further information.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 11th, 2007

St. Xavier Parish Home Page

Brothers and sisters, God gathers us together on this sacred day to taste and see the Lord's goodness as revealed in word and sacrament. Too often we become lost in the world of sin, but God always calls us back in to a life of fidelity. During this holy season of Lent we marvel at the generosity of our God. We begin this Mass conscious of God's mercy and compassion.

As we listen to the word of God today, let us be open to the power of the Holy Spirit. We often become lost in sin, hoping for a way out. Today's Gospel serves as an everlasting reminder that God is always there when we admit our sinfulness and come home to God's loving embrace. Let us truly taste and see the goodness of the Lord as that goodness is made present in the proclamation of the word.

Brothers and Sisters, today the Church throughout the world celebrates the first scrutiny with those who are preparing for baptism at Easter. A scrutiny is meant to uncover and heal all that is sinful in their hearts, and to bring out and strengthen all that is strong and good. God's word uncovers our sinfulness and strengths our goodness. We humbly welcome the presence of God, who sees deeply the desires of every human heart.
